Francisco Barona is a marvelous red wine produced by the winery Francisco Barona Viñedos in Pedrosa de Duero, D.O. Ribera del Duero.
In 2009, after studying oenology in Bordeaux and working in wineries all around the world, Francisco Barona returned to his homeland, Ribera del Duero, and started his personal project. By recovering century-old vineyards, he made authentic, singular and different wines.
In 2011, Francisco Barona managed to buy 5 “majuelos” or vineyards planted with old vines. Up until then, the grapes from these vines were sold to Vega Sicilia. Currently, the wine has 26 hectares of vineyard, 28 “grand crus” planted between 1908 and 1948. These vineyards are cultivated organically and following the cosmic cycles, without herbicides nor pesticides. At the winery, the processes are carried out manually and with very little intervention.
Francisco Barona is a wine made from Tinto Fino, Grenache, Albillo, Bobal, Monastrel and Jaén, from old vineyards located in the neighbouring municipalities.
James Suckling: “A rich yet fresh nose full of blueberries, blackberries and black olives that are dusted with some roasted spices, violets and cocoa powder. Juicy, flavorful and tight on the palate with a full body filled with powdery tannins and a long, caressing finish. Tinto fino. Drink or hold.” 93 Points
